Two secret key derivation (2SDK) with Argon2id is used to derive authentication and encryption keys, OPAQUE for password authenticated key exchange, and Chacha20Poly1305 for symmetric encryption. Beneficiary key shares are transmitted with quantum-resistant public key cryptography by using Ed25519 and Kyber1024 in a hybrid arrangement.
Upon's security design is carefully constructed to ensure improvements in quantum computing won't be able to decrypt your vault data. Our OPAQUE-based password-authenticated key exchange will be upgraded to a post-quantum scheme as soon as one is standardised, and does not pose a risk to the encrypted vault data in the meantime.
