Argon2id is used to derive authentication and encryption keys from a user's password, OPAQUE for password authenticated key exchange, and Chacha20Poly1305 for symmetric encryption. Beneficiary key shares are transmitted with quantum-resistant public key cryptography using X-Wing (X25519 and ML-KEM-768 in a hybrid arrangement) and dual-signed with Ed25519 and ML-DSA-65.
Upon's security design is carefully constructed to ensure improvements in quantum computing won't be able to decrypt your vault data. Our OPAQUE-based password-authenticated key exchange will be upgraded to a post-quantum scheme as soon as one is standardised, and does not pose a risk to the encrypted vault data in the meantime.
